Reed Rosenburg, 53, uninjured, after the GPS in his rental car sends him onto the tracks of an on-coming freight train, which crashed into his car.
Police: GPS sent driver onto train tracks in Webster before crash; no injuries reported.
Webster police are investigating after an Arizona man’s rental car was struck by a freight train along Main Street this morning.
The crash occurred just before 10:30 a.m. and forced the closure of Main Street for more than an hour while the car was removed. No injuries were reported a Webster police spokesman, said today in a statement.
Reed Rosenburg, 53, of Phoenix was searching for the parking lot of Matte’s Hardware on Main Street when the GPS of his rented Subaru Legacy instructed him to make a turn. Instead of driving into the parking lot, Reed found himself driving along the railroad tracks of Providence and Worcester Railroad, police said in the statement.
Reed realized he made an error, but it was too late — the car had become stuck in the snow piled on either side of the tracks, and he could see an approaching train in the distance. He waved his arms to get it to stop, but the train, which included 15 to 20 cars and three locomotives, was unable to in stop time, the statement said.
The train crashed into the car and dragged it about 100 feet, coming to a stop next to a 7-Eleven convenience store.
Main Street was closed for about an hour and 15 minutes.
The investigation into the crash is being led by Officer Patrick Perry, the statement said.
