Man dead after crash with Chicopee police cruiser

A man was killed after crashing his SUV head-on into a police cruiser in Chicopee. Police said the officer was traveling up Front Street at 2:12 a.m. when the SUV crossed into the officer's lane and slammed into the cruiser. Both the 37-year-old man and the police officer were taken to Baystate Medical Center, where the man died. The officer was treated at the hospital for bruises, lacerations and a head injury.

Chicopee Man Killed In Head-On Crash With Police Cruiser

Police have identified a man killed in a head-on crash with a police cruiser this weekend that also left an officer injured. Chicopee police Officer Mike Wilk said an SUV driven by 37-year-old Richard Chapin of Chicopee crossed into the opposite lane on Front Street and hit the police SUV. The crash occurred at about 2 a.m. Officer Joseph Pieczarka has been released from the hospital and is recovering from cuts and a head injury. The impact of the crash pushed the police vehicle into a city hall parking lot. Both drivers were taken to Baystate Medical Center, where Chapin later died.
