Springfield police identify 28-year-old city woman killed in car crash on St. James Avenue

It took firefighters, attached to the Special Hazards Unit and the Rescue Unit, nearly 45 minutes to extricate the passenger from the wreckage of the Nissan Maxima, Dennis Leger, aide to Commissioner Joseph Conant, said. 
28-year-old city Desteny Lancaster was fatally injured when she lost control of her car on St. James Avenue and slammed into a utility pole around 5:30 Saturday morning. Lancaster was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 28-year-old male passenger was transported to Baystate Medical Center, where he is in serious but stable condition. Speed, poor tire tread, and slippery road conditions were all factors in the crash, according to police.
