9-year-old girl, a student at Ruth Eriksson Elementary School, killed, after she is struck by a car on N. Haggerty Road, outside the school, in Canton, Michigan

A 9-year-old girl died Monday after being hit by a car outside of the Ruth Eriksson Elementary School in Canton. Canton police and firefighters responded to the accident around 8:30 a.m. at the school at 1275 N. Haggerty Road. Police believe the young girl might have attempted to regain entry into her vehicle and was subsequently struck as the vehicle pulled away. Canton paramedics transported the child to the University of Michigan Hospital, where she later died.
