Michigan State Police have identified the speeding motorcyclist who died May 24 during a police chase when he crashed into a pickup and caused both vehicles to catch on fire in Eastpointe. State troopers tried to stop James Morris Freeman III, 33, for a traffic violation around 3:50 p.m. for reckless driving on westbound I-94 near 10 Mile Road, according to a police news release. Freeman, driving a 1996 Suzuki motorcycle, looked back at the patrol vehicle in his mirrors and then maneuvered between cars stopped at the red light. Freeman sped through the red light on westbound 10 Mile Road and the pursuit continued for nearly two miles to Gratiot Avenue. During the chase, the troopers determined Freeman had an outstanding active felony arrest warrant for felony obstruction of police out of the 38th District Court in Eastpointe, according to the release. The pursuit continued on southbound Gratiot and Freeman continued to accelerate to get away from police. Police were about 150 to 200 yards behind Freeman when he approached the Toepfer Road intersection where Freeman crashed broadside into a car. But Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene and a .22-caliber pistol was recovered from him. He was not wearing a helmet.
