Man, 86, killed while checking damage on car from crash in Southgate.
An 86-year-old motorist who stepped out of his vehicle after colliding with a semi truck Monday in Southgate was struck and killed by another vehicle, police said. Lorenzo Fugate of Wyandotte had been driving south on Fort Street near Orchard Street in a Mercury when the first wreck occurred at 10:40 a.m. Two passersby stopped to check on him. He exited his vehicle. Then, a southbound Ford Ranger struck the Mercury, which in turn hit Fugate and threw him into the oncoming Ranger’s path, said Southgate Public Safety Director Thomas Coombs. The Mercury also struck the passersby, knocking them to the ground. Fugate, whose wife was a passenger in his car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both passersby were taken to a hospital; one complained of back pain and the other of neck pain, Coombs said. Fugate’s wife suffered a minor injury, Coombs said. The driver of the Ranger was also taken to a hospital.
