Pilot slowed plane too much in fatal Shiawassee crash

The pilot in a 2014 Shiawassee County crash that killed two men apparently failed to maintain adequate airspeed during an emergency landing, the NTSB has determined.

Authorities have released the names of two men who were killed when an experimental plane crashed in a Michigan farm field. Saturday afternoon’s crash killed 63-year-old Richard K. Hayward of Vassar and 49-year-old Mark J. Kozan of Caro. The crash happened in Shiawassee County’s Venice Township, about 15 miles west-southwest of Flint. A witness stated that he was standing next to his barn when he saw the plane “spitting and sputtering.” The witness said it made sharp turns before crashing into the field with its landing gear down. County sheriff’s Sgt. Brian BeGole says the plane was an experimental aircraft owned by an aviation company. The Federal Aviation Administration is leading the crash investigation.
