Woman killed, man in critical condition after crash in Calhoun County

Sheriff's deputies were assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police, Fredonia and Marshall township fire departments, Marshall Area Firefighters Ambulance Authority and the Calhoun County Road Department.
Hayes was driving an SUV in which Houle-Redner was a passenger north on 13 Mile Road at about 8:33am when he suddenly departed the roadway into a ditch and finally struck a tree. The two occupants were trapped in the crushed vehicle, and after they were extricated, Houle-Redner was pronounced dead at the scene while Hayes was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital via helicopter, where he remains in critical condition. Investigators believe that excessive speed for the conditions and ice on the roadway both contributed to the accident, but it is still under investigation.
