Ashley Caroline Houle-Redner, 24, dead and Christopher Forest Hayes, 24, critically injured following SUV crash on icy 13 Mile Road in Calhoun County, MI

Hayes was driving an SUV in which Houle-Redner was a passenger north on 13 Mile Road at about 8:33am when he suddenly departed the roadway into a ditch and finally struck a tree. The two occupants were trapped in the crushed vehicle, and after they were extricated, Houle-Redner was pronounced dead at the scene while Hayes was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital via helicopter, where he remains in critical condition. Investigators believe that excessive speed for the conditions and ice on the roadway both contributed to the accident, but it is still under investigation.
