The sheriff's department says Garraus lost control of a 2002 Kia Rio before it struck a tree. Alcohol was not a factor. 
A single-vehicle collision in Byron Township killed a Byron Center High School student Friday evening, and left another student slightly injured. The Kent County Sheriff's Department reports that Victoria Garraus, 17, was driving a 2002 Kia Rio south on Wilson Avenue when the driver lost control and exited the road, hitting a tree. The driver was pronounced deceased at the crash site, and the passenger, fellow student Cayla Dyer, was treated for minor injuries.
