Multiple accidents, some with minor injuries, force closure of U.S. 31 due to hazardous conditions.
Multiple wrecks on US-31 in Muskegon Co.
A section of US-31 was shut down in Muskegon County due to multiple wrecks and hazardous driving conditions Wednesday, and on another section of the highway, an ambulance flipped over, police said. The accident involving the ambulance occurred in Muskegon on US-31 north of M-120, police said. The ambulance was transporting a mother and her baby when it slid off the highway and flipped on its side. No one was injured in the wreck. The section of the highway that closed in Muskegon County was located in the southbound lanes from Laketon Avenue to Sherman Boulevard. In all, 14 vehicles, including two semi-trucks, were involved in a wreck at E. Broadway Avenue, Norton Shores Police Chief Daniel Shaw tweeted. Eleven people were injured, but the extent of their injuries was unknown. It wasn't until just before 5 p.m. that the highway reopened. Earlier in the afternoon, other sections of US-31 shut down due to wrecks and slide-offs. Officials also said that the police vehicle of an officer who responded to the scene of another wreck earlier in the afternoon on US-31 near Airline Road was hit while the officer was assisting at the scene, officials said. The driver involved in the first wreck was inside the police vehicle, and complained of back pain after the second wreck. A tow truck driver responding to a crash in the same area was also reportedly injured. MSP warned drivers early in the afternoon that there were multiple wrecks and slide-offs in a third location -- the westbound lanes of I-96 near Airline Road -- and while the highway wasn't shut down there, drivers should avoid the area.
