Car rear-ends buggy, 3 injured

Car driver was cited for careless driving.
hree people were ejected from their horse-drawn buggy after it was rear-ended by a vehicle, police said. The buggy was traveling east on Fawn River Road west of S. Centreville Road in Sturgis Township in St. Joseph County around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. A Chrysler station wagon was traveling behind the horse and buggy but the car driver did not see the buggy and struck it, police said. The buggy occupants were transported to a hospital. The male driver of the buggy, 30-year-old Lavon Knepp from Shipshewana, Ind., and an unnamed infant passenger suffered minor injuries. The other buggy passenger, 30-year-old Ester Knepp from Shipshewana, Ind., suffered serious injuries. The driver of the station wagon, 28-year-old Nicholas Conner from Sturgis, was cited for careless driving. Police said alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.
