Firefighters had to cut everyone out of the car. A 64-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ernest Yost, 64, was a passenger in car and died. The driver, David Mitchell, 57, and Carl Phillips, 46, another passenger, are in the hospital with serious injuries. Two other passengers, Ruby Richmond, 68, and Sandy Holts, 47, are being treated for minor injuries.

A man was killed and four people injured after a car accident in Calhoun County Sunday morning at around 5:30 a.m. on northbound I-69. The crash occurred when a passenger car with five occupants exited the freeway and crashed into a tree. Authorities said the group was returning to Grand Rapids from Birmingham, Alabama, where they attended a church event.  The driver was transported to a local hospital and is listed in serious condition. One passenger, a 46-year-old man, was airlifted and is listed in critical condition. Two other passengers, a 47-year-old woman and a 68-year-old woman, were also transported to the hospital; their conditions are not reported at this time. Authorities said a 64-year-old man, a backseat passenger, was pronounced deceased at the crash site.
