An 8-year-old boy was struck by a car in Ottawa County Monday evening. Authorities say he died early Tuesday morning.

The driver, identified as Todd Berends, 54, of Holland, tried to stop or avoid the boy but couldn't. Berends, a physician assistant, administered some first aid to the boy. Although Berends wasn't injured, he was quite shaken up, authorities said, and someone else took him home from the scene.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says Austin Lotterman, 8, is believed to have been going to the mailbox when the crash happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Witnesses said he looked west but not east before running into the roadway in the 4300 block of Adams Street near 40th Avenue in Jamestown Township.
A 54-year-old Holland man was driving west on Adams Street around 5:30 p.m. when 8-year-old Austin Lotterman ran across the road without looking both ways. The man swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the boy, but struck him with the passenger side of the vehicle. Lotterman was critically injured and taken to Spectrum DeVos Hospital for treatment, where he died the next morning.
