The pickup traveled off the right side of the road and struck the guardrail. After impact the driver was ejected and landed in the road. A westbound 2024 Freightliner semi driven by Brandon J. Lathrop, 22, Oro Valley, Arizona, struck the man in the road.

Around 6:45 p.m. Sunday, the Platte City man was driving a 2008 Ford F250 west on I-70, when he veered off the roadway to the right and struck the guardrail, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP).
