North Bergen car crash driver was under influence of alcohol: officials

Perez and the other two victims--Margarita Santiago, 32, of Passaic and Miguel A. Barreto Jr., 34, also of Leonminster--died at the scene, Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari said.

The vehicle, a white Mercedes station wagon, struck the guard rail at the point where Route 3 eastbound merges with Route 495, sending the vehicle into the air, Makarski said. Authorities believe speed was a factor in the crash.

Two of the three victims have been identified in a fatal single-car crash in North Bergen this morning, authorities said.

The three -- Margarita Santiago, 32, of Passaic, Miguel A. Barreto Jr., 34, of Leominster, Mass., and another Massachusetts man, died at the scene, said Mike Makarski, a spokesman for the Hudson County Sheriff's Office.

The identity of the second Massachusetts man has not yet been released. Authorities did not identify which person was driving.

The minivan landed on the driver's side door and slide about 153 feet before striking a light pole, leaving the mangled vehicle in multiple pieces.
