The North Bergen police chief believes Patterson was traveling about 74 mph along Kennedy Boulevard when he struck the teens. The speed limit on the road is only 25 mph.

His funeral mass took place on Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. at St. Joseph of the Palisade Church in West New York. It attracted dozens of family members, some of whom said they drove all the way from Iowa and California. While Herrera was born in the United States, the funeral was in Spanish for his El Salvadoran family.

A funeral mass for Rodriguez is scheduled for 11 a.m., on Wednesday, at St. Anthony's Church in Union City, two hours after the conclusion of the viewing at the funeral home, which began at 5 p.m. and was planned to last until 9 a.m. Wednesday.
