According to New Mexico State Police the plane had just left the Las Cruces Airport en route to Phoenix, Arizona. NMSP said the plane crashed just south of Interstate 10 near the Southern New Mexico Fairgrounds and burst into flames.

The NTSB preliminary report issued Monday does not say whether the wrong fuel caused the crash. However, it says a crew member called the dispatcher on a satellite telephone and reported they were returning because smoke was coming from the right engine.

Four people killed in an air ambulance crash west of Las Cruces in August died from a combination of burns, smoke inhalation and blunt force trauma, according to autopsy reports.
The plane was registered to Amigos Aviation Services from Arlington, Texas. A cancer patient was being transported to Phoenix, and was killed in the crash along with three medical staff. A National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report says that the plane was refueled with 40 gallons of jet fuel instead of aviation gasoline at the Las Cruces airport before takeoff.
