At about 5 a.m. Sunday, the Honda struck a concrete barrier in the construction zone. Spaulding suffered severe injuries in the crash. He was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso, where he is listed in critical condition. Sanchez was a passenger in the front seat, state police said. She was transported via helicopter to University Medical Center, where she was later declared dead. Evidence at the scene indicates that Spaulding was under the influence of alcohol, and that his impairment was a factor in the crash, state police said.
