Investigators say a small plane that crashed after takeoff from the Los Alamos airport had just made a sharp turn before it went down the morning of Dec. 8.

Authorities now say that two people were killed when a small plane crashed Sunday morning in a canyon about a mile south of the Los Alamos Airport.

At least one person died in a plane crash Sunday morning in Los Alamos, authorities said. The single-engine Aviat Husky crashed around 8 a.m. near the Los Alamos Airport by Canyon Rim Trail. A Los Alamos Deputy Fire Chief said there were no survivors in the crash. It is unknown how many people were aboard the plane. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. Officials from both agencies could not confirm whether the plane was local or from out of town or if it was landing or departing from the airport. Federal officials will be in Los Alamos Monday to try and figure out what caused the crash, but stressed that it may take some time before the cause is determined. UPDATE: The victims of this accident have been identified as 51-year-old Michael D. Fjetland of Harmony, Minn., and 52-year-old Kevin John Burrs of Corwith, Iowa. 12/19/13.
