Several people injured, including student with serious injuries in school bus crash on State Road 236 near Portales, New Mexico
A Wednesday morning crash involving a Portales school bus and a commercial motor vehicle left seven people hospitalized, including one with serious injuries, according to New Mexico State Police.
State police say six people were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and one person was seriously injured. There were 22 total people on the bus at the time of the crash.
One student has been reported to being airlifted to a Lubbock hospital, Portales schools Superintendent Johnnie Cain said. He has no details at this time regarding the student transferred.
The bus collided with an 18-wheeler northwest of Portales before school started, officials said. The cause of the accident was under investigation by New Mexico State Police.
The initial investigation by NMSP shows that the school bus was headed south on Roosevelt Road T, when “for reasons still under investigation,” the bus driver failed to yield at the intersection and was struck by a truck hauling a load of corn traveling west on State Road 236.
