The man who drove drunk, then crashed, killing his child and a passenger is learning how long he will spend behind bars Friday.

The crash occurred near Arenas Valley at about 4:30 p.m. The plane went down between the Whiskey Creek Airport and Highway 180 in a residential area, forcing evacuations in a nearby neighborhood.

Pilot, three teens in Silver City crash identified

The group had gone to look at the Signal Fire, a wildfire that started in the Gila National Forest about two weeks ago, before the plane crashed near a trailer park east of Silver City. Brian Myers, Ella Myers’ dad, said they had done an older eco-monitoring project in that area, and were going to collect new data on the flight, which he said was planned last minute. It was not school-sponsored.

Three students and one adult died Friday when a plane crashed about a mile northeast of Whiskey Creek Airport near Silver City.

A plane has crashed 3 miles east of Silver City, the Grant County sheriff confirmed.

The crash occurred near Arenas Valley at about 4:30 p.m. The plane went down between the Whiskey Creek Airport and Highway 180 in a residential area, forcing evacuations in a nearby neighborhood.

The crash ignited a small grass fire, which was quickly contained. The blaze also burned the plane.

Four people in the plane died in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.

The deceased will not be identified until next of kin notifications are completed.
