Witness to fatal, fiery Binghamton crash on I-81: 'I thought it was a plane'

"When I first saw the black column of smoke I thought it was a plane to be honest with you," Binghamton resident Richard Smith told WBNG. "I have never seen that much smoke from a car accident or a truck accident."

Three tractor-trailers collided Wednesday morning on Rt. 17/I-81 near Exit 3 to Broad Avenue around 9 a.m. Traffic was backed up for miles as the northbound lanes were closed for nearly two hours and the southbound lanes were closed until about 5 p.m.
