Update: Sanitation truck struck and killed woman on Clove Road in West Brighton

"That is a very bad intersection," said Doreen Minogue who lives near where the accident happened. "If you make a left turn from Delafield Avenue onto Clove Road, you can't see anybody in the crosswalk."
A city Sanitation truck struck and killed a woman pedestrian on Clove Road in West Brighton on Friday morning, according to a spokeswoman for the NYPD's Deputy Commissioner for Public Information. The woman, identified by family as Marie Valentino, 91, of West Brighton, died at the scene of the accident after she was struck by the Sanitation truck in the intersection of Clove Road and Delafield Avenue, according to the spokeswoman. "The Department of Sanitation can confirm that a tragic accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. today at the intersection of Clove Road and Delafield Avenue on Staten Island involving a collection truck that resulted in a fatality," said Kathy Dawkins, a spokeswoman for Sanitation. "The accident is under full investigation by the New York City Police Department. The Department wishes to extend sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. The Department's highest priority is the safety of our employees and the New Yorkers we serve." Neighbors described the Mrs. Valentino as a very nice, friendly woman in her 90s who lived with family a few doors down from where the accident occurred. A neighbor described her as very independent and said that she walked to a deli nearby on Clove Road every morning. Clove Road was closed to through traffic for more than four hours at the intersection where Bridget's Public House and the Express Deli are located. Cars were diverted onto side streets. "That is a very bad intersection," said Doreen Minogue who lives near where the accident happened. "If you make a left turn from Delafield Avenue onto Clove Road, you can't see anybody in the crosswalk." She didn't witness the accident, but speculated that the Sanitation driver never saw the victim crossing the street because of a blind spot. Clove Road also narrows from three lanes to two near the intersection.
