Canastota man killed in Thruway crash in DeWitt
A 64-year-old man was killed Friday afternoon when his Jeep went off the New York State Thruway and crashed.
The crash occurred just after 1 p.m. near mile marker 279 in the town of DeWitt.
The New York State Police said Russell J. Spinks, 64, of Canastota, was driving west on I-90 in a 2009 Jeep when he passed a vehicle in the passing lane. As he was pulling back into the driving lane he lost control of his Jeep.
The Jeep went off the north shoulder of the highway and hit a culvert and earth embankment. The Jeep became airborne and hit several trees before overturning.
Troopers responded to the scene along with firefighters, medical responders and Thruway authority personnel. Spinks was pronounced dead at the scene.
Traffic was slowed in the westbound direction, but the Thruway remained open, state police said. An investigation is continuing.
