While trying to walk across the street around 9:26 p.m., Lopes stepped into the southbound lane of Route 11 in front of an oncoming car, Keller said. Kaitlin Johnson, the driver of the oncoming vehicle, tried to swerve but couldn't avoid hitting Lopes, he said.
