Police in Charlotte say a 28-year-old man was killed when he slid on a patch of ice in east Charlotte and hit a utility pole. He had been drinking at the time of the crash, police say.

According to police, Thomas Andrew Lyall, 28, hit the icy patch along the 2300 block of Eastway Drive around 3:01 a.m. Friday morning.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report says he lost control of the vehicle and slid sideways off the side of the road. The vehicle hit a snow bank and then hit a utility pole before flipping on its side.

The force of the impact broke the pole in three places.

Lyall was pronounced deceased on the scene by MEDIC.

The front seat passenger, Joseph Kizina, was taken to Carolina's Medical Center-Main for non-life threatening injuries.

"At the time of the crash, the weather was clear and temperatures were below freezing," police stated. "There were patches of ice along this stretch of Eastway Drive. Alcohol and traveling too fast for the conditions of the road appear to be factors in this crash at this time."
