Multiple pedestrians struck by vehicle at North Carolina footrace, event officials say

It happened around 7 p.m. Thursday, July 7, when a footrace known as “The Bear” was about to begin as part of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, according to event officials.

The patrol says 80-year-old James Russell Deni of Boone was trying to leave the parking lot when the van accelerated into a group of people, killing 72-year-old Julie A. Holderness of Greensboro.
