Student, driver taken to hospital after car slams into school bus.

A school bus full of elementary school children was hit by a car in Rowan County Tuesday morning.
A school bus full of elementary school children was hit by a car in Rowan County Tuesday morning. The crash was reported around 9:45 a.m. on Woodleaf Road in Rowan County just outside of Salisbury near W. Ridge Road. The school bus was bringing back 28 students from Woodleaf Elementary School who had gone to see a play at the Norvell Theater in downtown Salisbury. A car crossed the center line of the road hitting the bus head-on. A second bus full of students was behind the first bus, but it was not involved in the accident. The driver of the car, Melissa Rivers, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. She is an administrator at Livingstone College. Six students on the bus complained of injuries and one student, a 9-year-old fourth grader, was taken to the hospital with what were described as minor injuries. Three adults were also on the bus. They were not injured. A spokesperson for Rowan-Salisbury Schools, said troopers and EMT's had words of praise for the bus driver and the teachers on board the bus for keeping the students calm and identifying those who may need help after the crash. "This is absolutely the phone call you never, ever want to get, is that there's been an accident," the spokesperson said. I think sometimes we have to look at the fact that these kids are on a big, huge, yellow bus, which in some ways is just a very safe place for them to be." Those students not injured were placed on another bus and taken back to Woodleaf Elementary.
