Car crashes into bridge; driver killed
The identity of the lone occupant of the car will not be released until an autopsy and medical examiner’s report are completed, according to Sgt. G.R. Catherwood of the Randolph County office of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Trooper C.R. Azelton is investigating the accident.
Catherwood said the accident occurred about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday when a red Ford Mustang, traveling northeast on Old N.C. 49, ran off the road to the right and then struck the concrete bridge railing end. The car caught fire and burned with what’s believed to be its lone occupant inside.
He said the driver and the vehicle were burned beyond recognition.
A motorist called 911 after coming upon the fiery accident which occurred between Farmer-Denton and Jackson Creek roads, just east of Farmer.
Catherwood said speed appears to be a factor for the accident. The driver was determined to have been traveling an estimated 100 mph in the 55-mph zone.
The accident closed the road to through traffic for about five hours Tuesday morning.
Catherwood said the fatality was the seventh for 2014 in Randolph County, compared to nine a year ago, as of June 2, 2013, and six for the year as of June 14, 2012.
