According to State Highway Patrol, Lankford was traveling on Cooper Road, about four miles south of Graham, around 6:50 p.m. Sunday. Scotty D. Brown, 37, of 1863 Edgewood Lane, Graham, was traveling behind Lankford on his black moped, of the same make and model, and attempted to pass Lankford. Trooper Tommy Day, who investigated the wreck, said it appeared that Lankford was getting over to prepare to make a left turn when Brown hit him. “We don’t think Mr. Lankford ever even saw Mr. Brown,” Day said. “He turned in front of him, and when he did that they both collided. Both fell to ground, and the mopeds skidded across the road.”
Authorities are investigating a fatal traffic accident between two mopeds. Johnny Dwaine Lankford, of Burlington, was killed after being thrown off his blue 2013 Tao moped. He was brought to the hospital by emergency services, where he was pronounced dead. Brown, of Graham, sustained injuries to his hand and wrist. According to police, the two men knew each other but weren’t riding together.
