A 13-year-old boy died Saturday after being electrocuted following a vehicle crash in Bertie County.

North Carolina Highway Patrol said around 12:30 p.m., a SUV ran off the road on Highway 42, west of Colerain, and hit a utility pole.

The driver, Amber Osborne, told troopers when she stepped outside of the vehicle she felt a shock in her feet and legs and told the other six passengers to stay inside the SUV. However, as she was warning the passengers, witnesses say her son, Zachary Stoyer, stepped outside and came into contact with power lines.

Troopers say the 13-year-old was electrocuted and fell to the ground. CPR was administered, but he was pronounced dead soon after.

No one else received any significant injuries.

Troopers say the group were on their way to Stoyer's basketball game at the Hertford County Recreation Center
