Family member responding to crash on I-71 in Mansfield fatally struck by car
The Ohio State Patrol is investigating a three-car crash on Interstate 71 in Mansfield that killed a man responding to a separate crash scene to take his family member home.
The crash happened Saturday at 9:30 p.m. near mile marker 177 on Interstate 71. A Mansfield trooper was investigating a single-car collision when Edward Howard, 55, arrived the scene to take his family member home. Howard parked behind the trooper's patrol car, and exited his vehicle. Joseph Schramm, 33, of Mansfield, was driving north on I-71 when he lost control and struck Howard's SUV and then the patrol car. Howard was taken to Med-Central Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Schramm was taken to Ashland Samaritan Hospital with minor injuries.
