An 89-year-old man and his wife were hospitalized following a high-speed crash on Route 83 Monday.

An 89-year-old man and his wife were hospitalized following a high-speed crash on Route 83 Monday.

North Ridgeville police stated that the 89-year-old man was driving a Buick Lucerne at nearly 100 mph and rear-ended a Mazda CX-5 around 1 p.m.

The Mazda was pushed into a ditch, flipped over and came to a rest near a telephone pole, police said, while the Buick traveled nearly 300 feet before coming to a rest in front of an Avon Beldon Road home.

The front end of the Buick was almost completely destroyed, police said.

The North Ridgeville police and fire departments and the Avon fire department responded to the accident.

The Buick's driver received critical injuries as a result of the crash, firefighters said, and he was flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. His current condition is not known.

The man’s wife, 75, who as in the passenger’s seat, firefighters said, was driven to St. John Westshore Hospital in Westlake and was listed in stable condition.

The Mazda’s driver, a 66-year-old woman, was also reported to be in stable condition following the crash.

The Buick’s driver may have suffered some type of medical issue before the crash, firefighters said.

The roadway was briefly closed between Center Ridge and Mills Road following the accident Monday afternoon.

The names of the three people who were injured have not been released.
