An officer is fighting for his life following an early Saturday morning crash that involved an alleged drunk driver. The crash happened around 12:16 a.m. on Station Road, just north Grafton Road in Liverpool Township. Ohio State Highway Troopers said Dalton P. Phillips, 23, of Columbia Station, was driving northbound on Station Rd. when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the east side of the road. Troopers said Phillips then over-corrected, drove left of center and was struck by a southbound car driven by off-duty North Olmsted officer, Jack A. Justice, 43. Troopers said Justice was on his way home from work when the crash occurred. Phillips' truck then went off the west side off the roadway, struck a ditch and overturned. Troopers said Phillips fled on foot from the scene of crash, but was apprehended a short time later and transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Officer Justice was also hurt in the wreck. He was flown by medical helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center with critical injuries. Sheriff’s deputies and other police departments throughout northeastern Ohio also sent their thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. Troopers said alcohol is suspected as a factor; however the crash remains under investigation.
