Police identify pedestrian killed in Interstate 5 crash near Roseburg
Oregon State Police say a 50-year-old man who was killed after he walked into the path of traffic on Interstate 5 near Roseburg had an apparent history of mental illness.
Charles P. Earwood, of Roseburg, was struck Saturday afternoon by a commercial truck driving northbound on the highway, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, a state police spokesman. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near milepost 126.
Hastings said investigators are still trying to determine whether Earwood intended to walk in front of the truck. However, witnesses told police that Earwood was walking on northbound I-5 and stepped in front of the truck as it approached in the right-hand lane.
Hastings said the truck's driver, William R. Iben, 47, of Chehalis, Wash., was not injured and cooperated with officers.
Hastings said help is available for Douglas County residents struggling with mental illness or suicidal thoughts. People can reach the county's Crisis Call Help Line any time at 541-440-3532 or 800-866-9780.
