A former Washington state representative was flying to the coast with a woman who wanted to spread her husband's ashes when the plane crashed, according to the Clatsop County Sheriff's office.

On Friday morning, an eight-member dive team descended into the water. They found what appeared to be the scattered and broken wreckage of the plane, according to Clatsop County deputies.

The AT-6A was built in 1941 and was designed to train military pilots during World War II. It had been fully restored by McKibbin and his friend and fellow pilot George Welsh, and was frequently on display at Pearson. McKibbin was an experienced private pilot.

His wife of more than 40 years, Nancy McKibbin, thanked those who gathered for the vigil. 

“It’s really hard to go to bed at night without him, hard to look in his drawers and see his clothes but I’m strong and I will make it through,” she said.

The cause of the plane crash is still under investigation. Crews will begin removing parts of the plane from the Columbia River on Tuesday, Bergin said.
