Crashes temporarily close I-84 east of The Dalles.

Multiple early morning ice-related crashes prompted Oregon State Police to close westbound lanes of Interstate 84 just east of The Dalles for two hours Monday morning.

Multiple early morning ice-related crashes prompted Oregon State Police to close westbound lanes of Interstate 84 just east of The Dalles for two hours Monday morning.

One of the crashes, which happened around 6 a.m., pushed a concrete barrier between east and westbound traffic into the opposite lanes of travel requiring Oregon Department of Transportation crews to repair the center divider, said an OSP spokesman.

In that collision, the driver of a commercial truck traveling eastbound in the right lane near milepost 87 lost control on ice. The truck shifted across the left lane and struck the concrete divider, pushing it into the westbound lanes. Then the truck and trailer swerved back into the eastbound lanes, where a pickup struck the back of the trailer. Another pickup traveling westbound crashed head-on into the center divider.

All three drivers, who were using safety belts, escaped with only minor injuries, Hastings said.

Eastbound traffic was diverted off of I-84 at exit 87, for travel on the Washington side until roadway repairs were completed. A westbound lane was also closed during incident response.
