One person was killed and another was injured in an accident near a Forest Grove school Wednesday, according to Forest Grove Fire & Rescue.

The man who died was identified as J T Mercado-Nuno, 49, of Hillsboro, and his coworker, Scott Bafaro, 27, of Portland, was also hurt, according to police. Both men were employed by Oregon Green Thumb Landscape Maintenance out of Forest Grove and were in the process of unloading equipment from a work trailer when the accident occurred.

The driver of the SUV that hit them was identified as Eric Adam MacDonald, 25, of Forest Grove.

A neighbor ran to help after she heard the crash just after 7:30 a.m. on 18th Avenue and Maple Street, near Joseph Gale School.

"I looked back and there was a truck on top of a man," said Angela Johnston. She saw a man lying in the street and partially covered him before performing CPR. But she said it was already too late. "I did everything I could...I feel bad for the driver. I feel bad for his family."

Medical staff from Forest Grove Tuality Hospital, just across the street, also ran over to help.

Police said sun glare may have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. MacDonald stayed at the scene to talk with investigators.

The road was closed for several hours after the accident.
