Simmons said rescue crews on scene could see the glow of headlights under the water. The Multnomah County dive team recovered Parke from the car more than an hour later.

One woman has been confirmed deceased after a car that veered to avoid a head-on collision at Marine Drive and Northeast 85th Avenue on Wednesday ended up in the Columbia River. Portland police identified the victim as Melissa Parke, 46, of Portland. Another driver called 911 around 7:30 p.m. to report that a car had entered the water off Marine Drive near the airport. Investigators believe the car either swerved or drifted off the roadway.
