An Oregon Dept. of Transportation official said two contract workers were installing speed bumps along the Carman Drive exit when they were hit by a semi around 1:00 a.m. The semi then jackknifed, blocking all four northbound lanes and rupturing its diesel fuel tank, along with the tank of the pick-up truck belonging to the highway workers. About 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the freeway.
Police cite semi-truck driver involved in work zone crash on Interstate 5 with reckless driving
A semi-truck driver has been accused of reckless driving after he collided with two construction vehicles on Interstate 5 early Friday, injuring two road workers and closing the roadway for hours.
The driver and workers have been taken to the hospital with what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries. Taxi driver Jason Collinson witnessed the aftermath of the crash. "It was just one little warning truck and then boom! These crews are in the middle of the road," he said. "Looking at this accident, it looks pretty terrible." The semi was towed away and the diesel fuel spill was cleaned up early Friday morning, and I-5 north was opened back up to all traffic shortly after 5:00 am. Police will be investigating how the truck came to hit the two workers, since ODOT said plenty of warnings are required, like hazard lights and signs, to tell drivers that a crew is working. The driver has since been cited for reckless driving.
