The deadly chain reaction was set off just before 12:37 p.m. when a 1996 Ford E250 driven by 50-year-old Lancaster resident Thomas Hogge collided with a 1998 Cadillac Seville driven by Harold White, 81, of Lancaster, according to a city police press release. White was southbound on Water at Lemon Street and Hogge was driving west on Lemon at the time, police said.

White lost control of his vehicle after the collision, swerving into the southwest corner of the intersection where it struck 52-year-old Lancaster resident Catherine Dowling, police said.

When police arrived a short time later they found Dowling prone in the street suffering several injuries. She was rushed to a city-area hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later, according to the release.
