State police said a woman and her 2-year-old son died when their car collided head-on with a pickup truck that was hauling a trailer Thursday in South Huntingdon Township. The deadly crash on Route 981 happened just before 7 a.m., according to state police. Jillian Trayter, 31, was headed north on Route 981 at a high rate of speed when she went into the opposite lane on a bend and hit the oncoming truck, a State Trooper said. "We wouldn't say anything excessive or anything like that, to the point where it would be reckless or anything like that, but a high rate of speed," police said. Police said the car went under the truck's trailer, which was hauling plated steel, and the trailer sheared off the top of the car. Trayter and her son, Calin, were killed. "She initially impacted the truck," police said, "and then, after impacting the front of the truck, it sort of threw the load that was on top of the trailer to the side, at which point she then impacted the trailer and went underneath the trailer." A witness who lives in the area, said he heard the crash and went outside to try to help. He said the driver of the truck also got out and called 911. The truck driver had minor injuries and was treated at Excela Frick Hospital. Police said no charges will be filed against him. "He sort of tried to come to a stop in his lane, but as you can see from the crash itself, there was limited possibility as to where he could go with his vehicle and with his trailer to avoid impacting her," police said.
