Surviving drivers' names released in I-78 fiery crash
Names of some of the drivers in a seven-vehicle crash on I-78 Monday afternoon that killed three have been released by Reading state police.
Surviving drivers are: Vincente Espinvera, 56, of Belleville, N.J.; Frank Burns, 37, of Gettysburg; Austin Knerr, 33, of Catasauqua, Pa.; Richard Hamilton, 61, of Amagansett, N.Y.; and John Hudock, 64, of Pottsville.
Two drivers and a passenger in one of their vehicles were killed, but their names have not been released by state police. The accident occurred about 1:15 p.m. in the eastbound lane about four miles west of the Kutztown exit, said Trooper David Beohm.
Eastbound lanes of I-78 were still closed, and Beohm said he isn't sure when they will reopen. Westbound lanes had been closed but reopened around 5:30 p.m.
Beohm said the accident apparently took place after a tractor trailer failed to sufficiently slow for traffic that had slowed or stopped. The tractor trailer rear-ended a car which then struck another car. Two cars burned, Beohm said.
