Two persons were injured in a two-vehicle crash at 1:42 p.m. Dec. 15 on State Route 54 (Suffolk Road) in Mahanoy Township. State police at the Frackville barracks said Nikolas Wydra, 24, of Ashland, was flown to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, by MedEvac 7 for evaluation of a head injury he sustained in the crash. A 16-year-old female passenger was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-East, Pottsville, for a minor leg injury she sustained, police said. Police said the accident happened when Wydra, driving a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer northbound on a haul road attempted to cross over Route 54 and traveled into the path of a westbound 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Michael Matunas, 54, of Mahanoy City. Police said the Explorer was unable to stop in time and struck the front end of the Blazer. The female was a passenger with Matunas. Police said Wydra will be cited for causing the crash.
