“Every year there's a safe route committee of parents, teachers and law enforcement that review the different walking routes,” says Seth Perrins who is the assistant city manager. “I'm sure this is something they'll want to look out.”
Emanuel "Manny" Romero Rivera was playing on the train tracks with a sibling and a cousin when he was struck by the train. His family members were able to jump to safety, but "Manny" was frozen with terror and hit by the train. The impact through him into the air and he landed in some nearby bushes. He was rushed to a children's hospital where he died of his injuries. The community is discussing what changes should be made to prevent an accident like this from happening in this area again. Today, balloons and stuffed animals were placed at the train crosswalk where he died.
