Former Hudson police chief injured in Vt. crash that killed friend

State police say a car driven by Frank Sargent of Woodbury crossed the center line of Route 14 around 9:15 am Sunday and collided with the motorcyclists.

A retired Massachusetts police chief is dead and another is in critical condition after they were struck by a car while riding their motorcycles in Woodbury, Vermont.

Killed was 55-year-old Joseph Rebello of Kingston, Massachusetts. The current Kingston police chief, Maurice Splaine, identified Rebello as the town's former police chief. Rebello also served as police chief in Stow and Monson.

Fifty-seven-year-old Richard Braga, also of Kingston, Massachusetts, is in critical condition at Fletcher Allen Health Care center. Splaine said he was former police chief of Hudson, Massachusetts.

The 52-year-old Sargent is in fair condition at Fletcher Allen.

The accident is being investigated.
