Man Charged in Fatal Albemarle Co. Crash Faces Wrongful Death Suit

The family of an Albemarle County man who died in a suspected DUI accident is now suing the man police say caused the crash. He is due in Albemarle County General District Court on September 24 for his criminal charge. The suit says the crash caused Branham's car to roll, crash into some boulders, crushing the roof of the car and killing Branham. The family of Lonnie Branham is suing Andrew Blackwell Middleditch, asking for $1.5 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages. Middleditch is still facing an involuntary manslaughter charge in Albemarle County for that crash.

UPDATE: Police Identify Person Killed in Barracks Road Crash

Police say both vehicles were heading east when Middleditch tried to turn left into a farm entrance. At the same time, Branham was trying to pass in a legal passing zone. The cars collided and the Lumina overturned. Branham was declared dead at the scene. Middleditch, who was not injured, is being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
