Michael D. Jones, 30, killed and Chiquita Pettaway, 34, charged after police chase and crash leads to fatal crash on Interstate 95 in Petersburg, Virginia
Girlfriend of man whose body was discovered at Petersburg crash site charged in his death
It wasn't until after the family of Michael D. Jones, 30, notified authorities about 8 p.m. Wednesday that Jones was missing and may have been with Pettaway that police returned to the crash site and found his body. Jones had been thrown from the vehicle after it flipped several times off I-95 and Graham Road.
Why every fatality from a crash is not legally a wrongful death
After someone dies in a motor-vehicle accident, grieving family members and friends are often left with many questions. What caused the accident? Could it have been avoided? What do they do now that their loved one is gone?
Sometimes a fatal collision happens through no one's fault. Crashes caused by weather and road conditions, or by wildlife in the roadway, are examples. But when a fatal crash is caused by negligence, then family members should pursue a wrongful death claim, to uphold the victim's rights and begin the financial recovery process.
