Michelle McGee, Aaron Baker, Kayla Poston, and Deanna Riner seriously injured in crash on June 1 on Route 71 near Nickelsville.

NICKELSVILLE — Four people were injured, including one critically, in a head-on collision that occurred Sunday night in Scott County.

The accident took place just after 7 p.m. east of Nickelsville on the 14000 block of Route 71, just before the turn off to Long Hollow Road.

According to Virginia State Police, a Dodge Durango was traveling northbound towards Russell County on Route 71 when it crossed over the centerline and collided head on with a Mazda 3 sedan traveling southbound.

The wreck reportedly happened on a straightaway between two sharp curves located roughly three miles east of Nickelsville.

Due to the amount of damage, emergency personnel at the scene said roofs had to be cut from both vehicles in order to extricate the occupants.

Three adults were transported by Wings Air Rescue and Med-Flight to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of their injuries while a fourth was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the Durango, Michelle McGee, of Castlewood, was listed in serious condition late Sunday night while the front seat passenger, identified as Aaron Baker, also of Castlewood, was in critical condition. A child who was also riding in the Durango reportedly sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the Mazda, Kayla Poston, and her passenger, Deanna Riner, both of Nickelsville, were also seriously injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Police said they were unsure Sunday night was exactly caused McGee to swerve into oncoming traffic.

Speed was not believed to be a factor in the accident.
