Corrine Geller, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman, said the driver of a 2002 Toyota Tundra pickup had a medical emergency and lost control of his vehicle, which then began bumping into other vehicles. She said the collision caused a chain reaction over a five-mile stretch of the interstate.

The driver, 57, from Alexandria, Virginia, was transported to a hospital for his serious medical condition and minor injuries sustained in the crashes. Investigators said he is not being charged due to the circumstance of the medical emergency.
